BEst Definition of prosperity. its not what you think it is.

In order to appreciate the definition of prosperity that I'm about to present here please keep in mind that as I mentioned on the main page of this site, every topic will be presented from a Christian, or Kingdom perspective.

The purpose of prosperity in the kingdom of God is not, as many believe, for bigger cars and finer houses. Citizens of the kingdom understand and know God's purposes for prosperity. They have the revelation that God wants to bless his people so they can be a blessing to the world around them. With this revelation of the correct definition of prosperity they have the capacity and the mindset to minister to a world caught up in the cycle of greed and lack.

God's blessing for his people, the citizens of his kingdom, is found in their obedience. If he says to them, "stay" then they stay. If he says, "move" then they move. They trust him  and therefore don't debate with him about the instruction he has given them. They simply obey.

Let me be clear before going any further. God's blessings, his prosperity is not just about finances. This subject is indeed a controversial one and therefore needs to be understood from God's perspective.

According to Strong's Complete Concordance of the Bible, one Hebrew word for Prosperity is shalom. The word shalom is often associated with peace, but let me be clear, the peace that Christ went to the cross for is a complete, whole kind of peace. Also according to Strong's, shalom is "completeness, soundness, welfare and peace". It represents completeness in number and safety and soundness in your physical body.

In summary, the definition of prosperity refers to completeness, nothing broken, nothing missing, no lack, no fear, no sickness. For your own benefit take a moment and apply this definition of prosperity to your current situation and see how it would change your life.

It comes AS a result of obedience

God Provides

Isaac stayed, as instructed, in the land that had been struck with famine and sowed seed. God blessed his obedience and he reaped a 100 fold return on what he sowed. All because of his obedience. This is how the kingdom of God works. It has enough provision to meet everyone's needs.

It doesn't matter what's happening around us, what matters is what's happening inside of us (with God's word). The richest man in the world is the most dangerous man in the kingdom of darkness (the world system).

The blessing of God on us, moves through us, and changes everything around us - like it did in Isaac's situation. When we leave a territory, the blessing leaves with us and the conditions return to their prior state. We are blessed of God to be a blessing to those around us.

Born-again, spirit-filled people of God are representatives of the BLESSING in tough times. Prosperity on the people of God is a witness to the goodness of God.

Let's take a moment and refer to Genesis 26:26-29 for some insight.

"26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had came to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal advisor and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27 Issac asked them, "Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?"

"28 They answered, we saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, 'There ought to be a sword agreement between us' - between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did no harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord."

There are three key points to come away with when reading this passage with regard to the blessing and prosperity of God;

  1. Verse 28: they could clearly see that the Lord was with Isaac
  2. Verse 28: they realized that God was on his side
  3. Verse 29: it was clear to them that God has blessed Isaac

Symbols of national or kingdom prosperity

Here are several passages we can learn from regarding how God sees prosperity. The first passage is found in Zachariah. In this passage the nation of Israel has experienced some extremely difficult times. Their enemies have inflicted a great deal of suffering on them for a while now. But here is what the Lord says to them through the prophet.

Zechariah 9:16-17 (NLT), "On that day the Lord their God will rescue his people, just as a shepherd rescues his sheep. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown. How wonderful and beautiful they will be! The young men will thrive on abundant grain, and the young women will flourish on new wine." ( definition of prosperity )

The reference to jewels in a crown is to indicate that they will once again be a conspicuous nation, they will gleam from afar, to be conspicuous as a signal, a flag fluttering in the wind, a sign, a banner, a token, an emblem.

Psalm 67:7 (MSG), "God, let people thank and enjoy you. Let all people thank and enjoy you. Earth, display your exhuberance! You mark us with blessing, O God, our God. You mark us with blessing, O God." ( definition of prosperity )

Genesis 12:2-3 (AMP), "I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you [with abundant increase of favors] and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing [dispensing good to others]...in you will all the families and kindred of the earth be blessed [and by you they will bless themselves]."

Deuteronomy 28:10-11 (AMP), "And all people of the earth shall see that you are called by the name [and in the presence of] the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. And the Lord shall make you have a surplus of prosperity." ( definition of prosperity )

It's obvious from these passages that God intended for prosperity on us to be as a witness to the goodness of God to those around us. Here are a couple more for you to consider.

Jeremiah 33:9 (NLT), "Then this city will bring me joy, glory, and honor before all the nations of the earth! The people of the world will see all the good I do for my people, and they will tremble with awe at the peace and prosperity I provide for them." ( definition of prosperity )

Phillipians 2:15-16 (AMP), "That you may show yourselves to be blameless and guileless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish (faultless unrebukable) in the midst of a crooked and wicked generation [spiritually perverted and perverse], among whom you are seen as bright lights (stars or beacons shining out clearly) in the [dark] world, holding out [to it] and offering [to all men] the Word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may have something of which exultantly to rejoice and glory in that I did not run my race in vain or spend my labor to no purpose." ( definition of prosperity )

It doesn't matter what country you're in the midst of. It matters what you do and what you believe. When things are bad around you, it's even easier to see the witness of prosperity.

summarizing the definition of prosperity

kingdom stewardship

God's blessing on his obedient children is a reflection of his goodness and his power and ability to provide for his children so that they stand out as exceptional among those around them that are not believers.

When you take the gospel message to nations or neighborhoods where there is suffering, lack or hopelessness, it's important for those people to see the tangible goodness of God, the love of God. Preaching a good and inspiring message is great but it wont' leave the hungry with a belly full of food. It won't restore sight to the blind or heal anyone with a life-threatening sickness. The validity of the gospel of Jesus Christ must be accompanied with signs and wonders. Otherwise, what would cause anyone to believe.

Don't wait until famine comes to you or your country to believe God. Do it now. Keep working by faith, keep believing God, it will get better. People should be able to look at the lives of the children of God, believers, and then come to us and ask us "how is it that you're able to do this, to live like this, that you're overcoming your circumstances?" We should be able to tell them how.

Isaac was not only a symbol of the blessing, of God's, he was also the source of the blessing to that region he lived in. The blessing of God works in the midst of a crooked generation, we are seen as a bright light.

That is my definition of prosperity and I hope it inspired you to reconsider the goodness of God. Remember to seek first the kingdom of God and all that you have need of will be provided to you as well. The secret is in the seeking. Once you discover it determine to abide in it.
