overcoming Famine and insecurity

Although devastating, overcoming famine and insecurity is possible when you are prepared for it and you understand God's will for His people during such difficult times.

Famine coming to America

Regardless of which part of the world you look to, at some time the region experienced a severe famine that wiped out thousands of lives. America has long been considered the bread basket of the world. In some regions of the country farmers were actually paid to not grow food so as to not negatively impact the price of of certain foods.

 This last decade we are seeing a drastic turnaround from this bumper crop years. I think it's interesting that this disappearance of bumper crops has coincided with the disappearance of God's word from so many segments of American society.

Most of this current generation  have not had to live through a severe famine of any kind. In Genesis 26 we read of a famine that came to the region that caused severe shortage, extreme scarcity and serious economic downturn.

Times like these are very difficult for those who don't know God or don't know what His word has to say about enduring such difficult times. In Hosea God tells us that "My people perish for lack of wisdom..." Fortunately it doesn't have to be that way. God is always talking to us. However, we're just not used to listening because so many other things are vying for our attention.

God's word overcomes all famine and insecurity

God speaks to us primarily through His word even though at times he does speak to us through the prophets. Even today that are prophets that God has raised up for certain situations and in certain nations to help the people overcome famine and insecurity. Here in America where the bible is so prevalent we should have no problem during times of famine hearing God by accessing His word. Here are some examples that gives us insight into the thoughts of God;

In the book of Job we read in Chapter 5:20-22;

"He will save you death in time of famine, from the power of the sword in time of war. You will be safe from slander and have no fear when destruction comes. You will laugh at destruction and famine; wild animals will not terrify you."

Psalm 33:18-19

"Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy; to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine."

As long as there isn't a famine of God's word in the land we will be spared from the hardship that results from a lack of food and water. He is watchful over His people, He is the good shepherd that makes sure his flock is well take care leading to rivers of water and green pastures in which to graze and lie down in. Sheep who trust in their shepherd and listen to his voice are never in danger of famine and insecurity.

There will be times of lack simply because the world we live in is in a fallen state. However, God's people can expect to have more than enough during any period of famine and insecurity. As a people we can expect to live lives where we are constantly overcoming famine and insecurity. He promises in Psalm 37:18-19;

"The Lord know the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied (to have enough, to be filled up, to have plenty of)."

I referred earlier to a passage in Genesis that tells of a severe famine that afflicted the area. In spite of the effects of this economic downturn the man of God not only survived but he thrived;

"Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar.The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live. Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b]because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.” So Isaac stayed in GerarGen 26:1-6

This narrative tells us that Issac was about to seek help from the King in the area in order get provision for his family. But God appears to him and instructs him to not go down to Egypt. It was God's plan to train up his man to separate himself from the world's system and to trust in the promise that God had made to his father Abraham. God wanted to build Issac's faith, a faith that would later be passed down to his children. A faith that would be a trait of a nation that was not yet birthed. A faith they would need in order to survive insurmountable odds during times of famine and insecurity throughout their existence.

In this passage we later see Issac defy an economic downturn and become the richest man in the world.

"12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,because the Lord blessed him. 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him. Gen 26:12-14

operating above the world's system

Why am I taking the time to recount these passages of famine and insecurity from the bible? Is any of this really worth learning or reliable in place of what we currently know to do?

Because you need to know there are more periods of extreme economic hardship coming to America. And YES, what I'm sharing is worth learning and implementing in your life.

Have you ever noticed the validity of that old saying, "the rich just keep getting richer". It happens to be true not because they are robbing everyone else or operating illegally. They just happen to know how the economics of our free enterprise capitalist system works better than the average Joe. Or they hire people who know more than they do to manage their wealth.

If you were an expert mechanic wouldn't you have an advantage over the average Porsche owner when it comes to regular maintenance and avoiding costly repairs. Of course you would. You would have an understanding of the power train and braking system that would allow you to notice potential problems before they became serious and costly issues. As a result you could take preemptive actions to avoid costly breakdowns and keep your car running when others are in the shop.

The same logic can be applied with regard to God's word and living in this world's economic system. He has left us a record in his word that illustrates his ability to take care of his people when they take the time to know his word and act on it. You too can live above the world's system and be overcoming famine and insecurity because you have learned from Gods words about operating in the Kingdom of God system.
