God is love !
It's not like you've never heard that before. But like a lot of things in life I have found we take so many things for granted without giving it much thought.
In America the word LOVE is so overused that it has truly lost it's meaning and as a result it's unique value. We love so many things that if you did give it much thought you'd be astounded at how many instances in which we apply this word.
The purpose of this section is to examine what real love looks like and compare it to what we are accustomed to. In that endeavor I hope that you will come to appreciate and hunger for the Love of God - the unconditional love of God. It is this love that God wants each us to share with each other because it is so powerful.
How can the word LOVE be used to express the correct feeling in so many different instances? Has this word been devalued by not using it with more respect for its true and appropriate meaning?
Our problem in America is that the English language is not well suited to effectively communicate our thoughts and emotions. I think that's why in high school they used to require everyone take at least one year of Latin so we could appreciate what we call language or linguistics.
Hard to believe that within the span of a few minutes we can inform everyone around us that we would LOVE to order a pizza and when the pizza is delivered to our house by a beautiful young lady we comment to our friends that we think we're "in LOVE". The same word couldn't possibly mean the same thing.
The ancient Greeks were very sophisticated in their communication. For those of you who didn't know, the entire New Testament was written in Greek and therefore, translators were able to accurately convey into the various languages of the world what the writers were communicating.
Using the Greek language as our basis let's review the meaning of LOVE to see if we gain any insight into the idea that God is love.
Eros, or sexual passion - eros was viewed as a dangerous, fiery, and irrational form of love that could take hold of you and possess you
Philia, or deep friendship - it was about showing loyalty to your friends, sacrificing for them, as well as sharing your emotions with them
Ludus, or playful love - the idea of playful love, which referred to the affection between children or young lovers, we also live out our ludus when we sit around in a bar bantering and laughing with friends, or when we go out dancing
Agape, or love for everyone - perhaps the most radical, a selfless love, the highest form of Christian love, used to express the God kind of love demonstrated in Christ death at the cross
Based on these various expressions of LOVE I am convinced that we Americans need to find another word to express our love if we are appreciate that God is love.
Knowing full well that we can be a little dense and slow to comprehend, God the father made sure that there would be no doubt in our minds how much he loved us and what kind of love he wants to shower on us.
He wants to show us without a doubt that HE is love...
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" John 3:16
We've heard this so many times that we're actually numb to the true meaning of God is love and can't appreciate it's value. How many of us would ever contemplate giving up our only child in order to redeem another person or an entire nation for that matter? The degree of God's Agape love is further expressed in this passage...
"But God demonstrates His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" Rom 5:8
Only one other person in human history ever considered doing such a thing and his name was Abram. The story of the Jewish patriarch preparing to offer up his son Issac is available in Genesis...
"He said, don't lay a hand on the boy! Don't do anything to him! For now I know that you are a man that fears God, because you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me" Gen22:12
Before you toss aside the revelation that God is love and run off labeling God an insatiable Diety who wants our constant attention and cares nothing for us, you need to realize that God never intended for Abram to actually slay his son. This was an important test that Abram had to endure and pass to prepare him for what God hand in mind.
If God had desired Abrams son Issac to satisfy his appetite then he could have just taken him.
God did not give us a "to do" list that we had to first accomplish in order for us to be considered for redemption from the penalty of our sins. He longed for us to be reunited with Him and he planned all along to make possible the reality of experiencing that God is love.
In case you still can't relate to this "dying on the cross" business let's look at this from another angle.Your only daughter, daddy's little girl, is planning to move into her own apartment now that she's finished school.
You can't bear the thought of her leaving the nest. But you know that she's preparing for this day.
Being the doting father that you are you and your wife find a suitable place in a safe neighborhood and make a list of all the things that your little princess will need in her new home to make life as comfortable as possible;
Your intent is to make sure that all her needs are met and that she doesn't have to worry about these things. She can focus on her new career and start planning for the next phase of her life. You want her to have a comfortable and secure place to come home to each day. That's what you, a loving father, would do for your only child.
Why would God's love not be expressed as much for you and I? God's intentions are made clear in this passage...
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matt 6:28-34
God is love and expresses his love throughout all creation. There is beauty in all of nature and he created it just for us to enjoy. Take a moment to look at his handiwork and you will see that God is love and expresses His love for us all the time.
The related articles I plan to add will hopefully point out the love of God for you and will ignite within you a hunger that you know only He can fill and you'll come to that place where you live in his love daily.

Rating 5 Stars - This book is filled with amazing revelation of God's love and grace towards us and all he has done for us through the finished work of the cross. It is refreshingly consistent with the teaching of the Bible and is the exact opposite of the untrue message that God is angry and judging the world for its sins.
