Immigrant Lawbreakers May Soon Get to Vote

by Michael Reagan
(United States)

San Francisco residents will have an opportunity on Election Day to extend the voting franchise to chronic lawbreakers. According to Bloomberg Politics, if passed, "the parents or legal guardians of any student in the city’s public schools to vote in school board elections. The right would be extended to those with green cards, visas, or no documentation at all."

San Francisco Assemblyman David Chiu justifies support of the referendum this way: "One out of three kids in the San Francisco unified school system has a parent who is an immigrant, who is disenfranchised and doesn’t have a voice. We’ve had legal immigrants who’ve had children go through the entire K-12 system without having a say."

Evidently those parents were content with not having a say, because nothing prevents a legal resident from applying for citizenship. Maybe they thought not voting for obscure school board candidates was a small price to pay for avoiding jury duty.

Chiu would like to cheapen the right to vote even further by letting illegal aliens vote because they deserve to bypass the "broken immigration system in this country." The problem with his reasoning is the only thing broken about the immigration system is enforcement.

If these illegals want to vote there is nothing preventing them from visiting the consulate of their respective countries and voting in the nation where they are legally citizens. And if living in a country where they are denied the vote is so onerous, they can always go home.

Besides, if having no say in taxes justifies extending the franchise then tourists should have the right to vote, too. They already pay an exorbitant hotel/motel tax and a tax on rent cars. Why not let them vote for politicians who might lower those taxes on visitors? They could drop off a ballot and the keys to their rental car at the same time.

The reporter contends from the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the United States was a hotbed of non-citizen voting. Yet at that time government wasn’t a conspiracy against the taxpayer. Elections didn’t consist of competitions were the takers forced the makers to "share the wealth." What she also fails to explain is that until 1856 in some states only property owners could vote and for over a century women could not vote at all.

Passage of this referendum will only serve to reward law breaking and procrastination. Why not just ship a bale of absentee ballots into Mexico and save illegals the time and expense of sneaking across the border?

Some of you may be saying if Chicago permits the dead to vote, why be stingy on letting the living participate? The difference is that at least in Chicago deceased voters were citizens at one time.
