Seeing and Entering the
Kingdom of God

Is seeing and entering the kingdom of God still possible today? Or is it something that will not be possible until the prophesied return of the Messiah? This is not a matter that is hidden deep somewhere in the scriptures. It is mentioned often in the New Testament and therefore we should be able to learn about it relatively easily.

In the Gospel of Matthew is where we are first introduced to the Kingdom of God;

"In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand" for this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:

    "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord;make his paths straight" Matthew 3:1-3

From this passage we get a glimpse of something new that is about to happen. First of all, the Kingdom is connected to Jesus. Therefore, the arrival of Jesus signifies the beginning of God's kingdom. John already knew this and he understood he was to announce the coming of this new king and kingdom.

We miss this fact because of our predisposition with regard to kings and kingdoms. We expect a new king to be introduced with a coronation. Yet, in the case of Jesus we are introduced to Him through his birth in very humble surroundings.

This is where we first miss seeing and entering the kingdom of God. Mankind failed to see the arrival of God's kingdom and it's king 2000 years ago and most of humanity still is unable to see it.

Shortly afterwards it's recorded for us in Mark's gospel where we miss seeing and entering the kingdom of God again and therefore don't see it today;

"Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. " Mark 1:14-15

What is so significant about this announcement is that Israel was looking for the arrival of the Messiah who would come to deliver them from the Romans and restore the kingdom of Israel. Their prophets had provided detailed prophecies of what life would look like when the Messiah would return. Yet, they failed to recognize Him in their very midst and therefore missed seeing and entering the kingdom of God.

If the Jews at that time had the Messiah in their midst and yet went about without seeing and entering the kingdom of God then why should we think that we would not be guilty of the same error?

Realizing the Existence of Two Domains

two domains

Before I tackle the subject of two domains let's first establish a definition of "domain".  Simply, a domain is a kingdom ruled by a king. This is also where we get the word "dominion" from.

Now, without getting too spiritual on you, let me point out that humans exist in a physical realm or domain. However, there is also the existence of a spiritual realm or domain. The physical domain is what you and I can see, touch and smell. The ream in which we live.

Jesus reveals to us that there is also a spiritual domain. When responding to Pilate he gives us the following insight;

"Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm." John 18:36

The creator of the universe makes it clear that there is another realm other then the one were accustomed to. His kingdom originates and operates in that realm. With his arrival he signifies that His kingdom has begun to occupy a place in this realm as well and He is now establishing His domain.

So far it all seems pretty mysterious. That's probably why the Jews at the time failed to see it. Not so fast!

It would be cruel and unlike Jesus to make seeing and entering the kingdom of God a rather difficult affair. There are plenty of instances throughout the New Testament which indicate that Jesus went to great lengths to reveal His kingdom to Jews and us. In Luke's Gospel he states, "I must preach the kingdom to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose". Luke 4:43

Maybe it was because the Jews had a preconceived notion of what the kingdom would look like and therefore missed seeing and entering the kingdom of God. So, if that's true, how can the kingdom of God be described so that it's easy to recognize?

Before you go looking for a detailed description of the kingdom let's first review the one key component that's required for seeing and entering the kingdom of God.

Main Requirement for Seeing and Entering The Kingdom of God

born again man

During His ministry undoubtedly many of the religious leaders weren't sure what to make of this upstart rabbi. He was shaking things up with his teachings and threatening everything they had built their lives upon. There was one element of his teaching that really disturbed them and it was the idea that God's people needed to enter into this new kingdom.

One of these religious leaders was Nicodemus. The gospel of the kingdom apparently touched a nerve and Nicodemus wanted answers to soothe that nerve. The gospel of John reveals a conversation between the two addressing this concern;

"Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:1-8

Wow! I bet that just blew Nicodemus' theology right out of the water. I can just imagine the guy standing there thinking to himself, "Man, he did it to me again. How can this simple carpenter have such a deeper understanding of the things of God than I do, what's his secret?"

Let's analyze this conversation

  1. Nicodemus is admitting that he has seen the kingdom of God through the ministry of Jesus. He has seen the many miracles with his own eyes. He even admits that Jesus was sent of God and that is how he is able to perform these miracles. Unfortunately, he doesn't so far as to say that Jesus is God, or the Son of God.
  2. Jesus interrupts Nicodemus abruptly and states that despite the signs that Nicodemus has witnessed he is still unable to see the kingdom. The reason for his inability to see the kingdom is also addressed by Jesus when he states, "...unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God".
  3. The need to be "born again" is what Nicodemus cannot comprehend. As well studied as he is Nicodemus should have been able to discern this fact. This is a stumbling block that Jesus points out to Nicodemus and one that must be overcome. The reason he cannot overcome this stumbling block is because he is addressing it from the natural realm rather then the spiritual.
  4.  Jesus hints at this with his next statement, "unless one is born of water and the spirit" . The "water" represents an element that is found in the natural realm, in our domain. It represents the natural process of birth by which there is the breaking of the water sack prior to the actual birth. The reference to the "spirit" represents an element of the spiritual realm or domain. The spirit of man up until that point is dormant and needs to be awakened and empowered. A process that is performed by the Holy Spirit.
  5. There are three elements to mankind. Man is a spirit, with a soul, (the mind, will, and emotions) temporarily occupying the physical realm through the use a physical body. God, who is spirit, was able to walk among men only because he made use of the proper earth suit, a human body which he acquired at birth. His baptism in the Jordan river signified his infilling with the power of the spirit. His ministry did not begin until after his baptism and acknowledgement by God the Father. He operated His ministry from within the kingdom. We too must be "born again" with the spirit of God in order to live our lives seeing and entering the kingdom of God. The spirit of God breathing upon our dormant spirit awakens it to a more noble life to be lived out within the kingdom. Remember, the bible teaches us that we are "in" the world but we are not "of" or from the world. Our identity originates from whence we came, the kingdom of God.

How Does This Relate to America and It's Citizens?

The original founders were attempting to establish a country that would be occupied by fellow believers looking to live their lives according to the kingdom principles taught in the scriptures. They believed that dedicating the country to Almighty God and acknowledging and implementing his laws would cause his grace and unmerited favor to be present throughout the land and bring glory to Him.

A noble and worthy effort.

As I've attempted to reveal through other writings on this site there is reliable and historical documentation that record many wonderful examples of what we can only call miracles that took place throughout the early history of this country.

The quick rise to prominence and the impact this nation has had on so many other countries testifies to the fact that we are blessed of God. Despite our obvious flaws, the grace of God has carried us forward to many victories and blessings and a standard of living that is envied the world over.

As long as we don't lose sight of the kingdom of God and his righteousness we can expect God's presence to remain with us. If we choose to be ignorant like Nicodemus and fail to seek and understand that God desires to have his presence seen in this nation then we will soon see the collapse of this nation one family at a time.

It is obvious that there is so much that isn't right with our nation currently. Our leaders in Washington fail time and again to admit and address the cause for the current condition of this nation. As a result of a lack of prayer and God inspired wisdom there is no action being taken.

The action that is needed is repentance. As more Americans realize that the condition of the nation is due to a moral collapse and commit to a real and lasting repentance then more of us will be seeing and entering the kingdom of God.
